Brief description:
Fairy tales are narratives that were passed down orally from generation to generation. They are a surviving ancient oral tradition, the starting point of which cannot be determined. Scholars have classified these tales based on their type and content as magical, realistic, facetious, religious, and animal tales. They reveal the mentality of the people who created them, as well as those who spread, modified and assimilated them. Most popular in Cyprus are fairy tales with dragon-killing heroes while in some tales influences of Greek mythology are evident. Of particular interest is the dialect in which the Cypriot folk tales are recorded.
