Anti-Doping Convention

Doping is a public health issue. It jeopardizes the values, ethics and integrity of sport; and the health of those involved in it.

In today’s highly competitive sporting environment, the use of performance enhancing substances and methods in sport is becoming more pervasive. Doping is a public health issue. It jeopardizes the moral and ethical basis of sport and the health of those involved in it. UNESCO is actively involved in the anti-doping fight because of its desire to preserve fair and equitable sport and to protect young people involved in sport.

The International Convention Against Doping in Sports helps to harmonize anti-doping legislation, guidelines, regulations, and rules internationally in order to provide a fair and equitable playing environment for all athletes. The Convention is constantly evolving and has been modified several times after its first voting in 2004.

Cyprus ratified the International Convention Against Doping in Sports in 2009. In the same year, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports founded the Cyprus Anti-Doping Authority, which is responsible for the effective management and implementation of anti-doping policy, according to Cypriot Legislation as well as other International legal instruments.
