Physical Education and Sports is one of the topics addressed within UNESCO’s wide range of activities by providing guidance and help to States, NGOs and experts in the field of sports so that they can modernize and enhance current systems for physical education.

The framework of action in this field includes the following thematic areas:

  • Sports for Peace and Development
  • Quality Physical Education
  • Traditional sports and games
  • Women and sports
  • Anti-Doping

The responsible body for the coordination and decision-making in relation to the aforementioned issues is the Intergovernmental Commission on Physical Education and Sports (Inter-governmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS)), which is constituted by 18 elected member-states. The Commission aims to promote international cooperation in the field of physical activities and enhance peace, understanding and mutual respect among peoples.
