Underwater Cultural Heritage

Underwater Cultural Heritage encompasses all traces of human existence that lie or used to lie under water and have a cultural or historical character. Recognizing the urgent need to preserve and protect such heritage, UNESCO elaborated the Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage in 2001.

Although Cyprus has not yet ratified the Convention, it has been following some of the international meetings, which were implemented so far, while at the same time it promotes the participation of experts and students in seminars related to Underwater Cultural Heritage.
