The preservation of cultural diversity has been one of the main aims of UNESCO, even prior to the adoption of the Convention for the Protection and the Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.
Since 2007, when the Convention came into effect, new approaches in the different expressions of culture are being sought out - books, TV programmes, music, live shows and many more- while ways for their development and promotion are being explored. Simultaneously with the implementation of the Convention, as well as the promotion and funding of relevant Programmes, UNESCO publishes studies and world reports, organizes conferences and meetings of experts and encourages the involvement of Non-Governmental Organizations in the promotion of respect for difference and cultural diversity.
In Cyprus, the responsible body for the implementation of the 2005 Convention is the Ministry of Education and Culture. Furthermore, an UNESCO Chair has been established at the University of Nicosia, entitled “Cultural Diversity and Intercultural Dialogue for a Culture of Peace”.
