Brief description:
Every year on May 5th, the religious fair of Saint Irene is celebrated in Farmakas, being one of the most known outdoor religious and social events in Cyprus. The celebration lasts from 3 to 5 days. In the past, during these days, a large number of pilgrims visited the village to leave offerings and to worship the miraculous icon of Saint Irene. Pilgrims spent the night in the outdoor area of the church or at a friend’s home. Feasts were set up in the village cafes and in the houses of the residents. In addition, the fair used to be the main commercial activity of the area. Even today, street vendors set up their goods in the churchyard but also along the main street of the village near the church. It is also an important social event for the residents, as a large number of visitors arrive in the village and everyone celebrates the festival of Saint Irene together.
