Lecture “Combating sexual violence against children: the role of sports governing bodies in the prevention and handling of the phenomenon”

The Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO, in cooperation with the Cyprus Sports Organization, is organizing a lecture on the topic “Combating sexual violence against children:  the role of sports governing bodies in the prevention and handling of the phenomenon” on Friday, April 15 2016, from 18:00 to 20:00, at the Crown Plaza Hotels & Resorts in Limassol.

The purpose of the lecture is to educate, sensitize and familiarize all the governing bodies involved in sports (Federations, clubs, societies, associations, athletes, parents, sports medicine professionals etc.) with the prevention and handling of incidences of sexual exploitation and abuse of minors.

The lecture will be presented by Dr. George Nikolaidis, Head of the Department of Mental Health & Social Welfare, Institute of Child Health in Greece, National Representative of Greece at the Commission for the implementation of the Lanzarote Convention and the “Building a Europe with and for the children” programme at the Council of Europe, and Representative of the country at the World Health Organization on issues of child abuse and neglect.

Mrs. Anastasia Papadopoulou, lawyer and member of the group which wrote the 2014 legislation on sexual abuse, will also participate as a speaker and will elaborate on the legal aspect of the topic.

Addresses will also be made by the Cyprus Sports Organization president, Dr.  Clea Hadjistephanou-Papaellina and the Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO member, Mr. Pavlos Dapolas.

The event is held within the framework of the pan-European “One In Five” campaign of the Council of Europe, for the end of sexual violence against children.
