The Symposium is part of the general thematic aim of ASPnet in Cyprus for the academic year 2017 – 2018, which is “Global Citizenship and Heritage Education”, within the framework of the European year of Cultural Heritage 2018 and the UNESCO ASPnet Strategy 2014-2021. In addition to the acquisition of knowledge, other targets of the programme include: providing young people with the necessary skills so that they can form their own views concerning society, culture and history; developing creativity and critical thinking; cultivating a consciousness of shared responsibility for the resolution of contemporary problems as active citizens.

The programme of the Symposium comprises two round table discussions with the topics “Youth for heritage: The past as an integral part of contemporary and future life” and “The school as a bearer and depositary of cultural tradition and heritage”. Subsequently, the students will have the opportunity to participate in discussion groups and a variety of experiential workshops during which they will investigate contemporary approaches and alternative teaching methods for issues related to cultural heritage.

The Symposium is under the auspices of the Cyprus Youth Organization and the Minister of Education and Culture Dr Costas Hambiaouris will address the participants at the opening ceremony.
